Summary

The body is composed of many systems, including the breathing system, skeletal system and sensory organs. The breathing system is the process of taking in oxygen and giving out carbon dioxide, which takes place continuously without rest. The oxygen rich blood from the lungs is circulated to all parts of the body and collects carbon dioxide from the lungs. The skeleton of an adult human being is made up of 206 bones of different shapes and sizes, and is composed of four main parts: the skull, the backbone, the rib-cage, and the limbs. The backbone is connected to the skull by thirty-three small bones called the vertebrae, which protect the spinal cord.

The rib cage is composed of twelve pairs of ribs, joined to the backbone and the breast bone. The limbs are joined to the spine by the shoulder girdles and collar bone, and the hand has many small bones in the palm and fingers. The femur, or thigh bone, fits into the hip girdle and is connected to the lower two bones of the leg at the knee. All joints show movement except the skull, which is fused and interlocked and thus, shows no movement. The four types of joints are the hinge joint, ball and socket joint, pivot joint and gliding joint.

The hinge joint is found between the skull and the first two vertebrae of the spine and provides back and forth movement of the body part. The Ball and Socket Joint is found in the hip and shoulder joints and the pivot joint is between the first and second vertebrae. The gliding joint is present in the wrist, ankle and between the vertebrae and is responsible for the flexibility of the backbone. Human beings have five sensory organs: nose, eyes, ears, tongue and skin. The nose collects information and sends it to the brain.

The ear has outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. The eye is connected to the brain by the optic nerve and the tongue has taste buds. The skin forms a natural protective covering of the entire body and helps us to feel pain, touch, pressure, hotness and coldness.

Different animals use different organs to sense different things. Insects, such as cockroach, housefly and butterfly, have feelers on their bodies which help them smell and taste. Water animals, such as fish, can feel the waves produced in water by other living animals. Birds have sense organs which enable them to see, to feel, to smell, to hear and to taste. Reptiles, such as snakes, have a long tongue which helps them to feel and smell. Mammals, such as dogs, have a special power to smell, hear or to see. Bats have a special ability to hear high-pitched sounds, which is why they hunt at night.
